Ashlee Simpson Wears Kefiyah

I know Ashlee Simpson was probably not thinking when she decided to wear a kefiyah in public, but come on. I can’t stand the fact that people are wearing these without knowing what they mean to people. When I see someone wearing one all I can think about is all my friends and family who have been hurt and killed by terrorists.
I truly hope that this was just a mistake on Ashlee’s part and she won’t be wearing this again in the future.

A kefiyah is not a terrorist mask, it has just been worn by terrorists. Just because it is an arab fabric does not mean its a terrorist fabric.

Read this:
A kefiyah is not a mask. It is a traditional Arab fabric used to protect oneself from the elements (cold, wind, sand.) It has a long history, but has recently come to symbolize solidarity with the people of Palestine, whose homes have been destroyed and whose right to self-determination has been superseeded by the occupying state of Israel. This is the longest occupation in human history and costs America 15 million dollars a day. We (Peace activists) are not against a homeland for Jews, but when it requires the systematic displacement of a people, based on race and religion, to make way for a people of a certain race or religion, we certainly are. We do not support any leader, Arab, Western, or other that encourages violence. We simply want these (and all) people’s struggles to be recognized behind the few extremists so often portrayed in the media, (and sadly in your one sided argument)
Please give me an historical example of a people who have been violently occupied such as Palestinians, without there being a violent, militant response.
Just because “terrorists” have worn kefiyehs does not make it a “terrorist mask” as you claim it to be. In an age of wiretapping, patriot acts, and incresed surveillance, if you were an arab protesting against Israel, where you could be easily labelled as something you weren’t, would you not cover your face?

Wow, you all think you’re pretty smart. The admin never said the keffiyah was a mask, christina6644 did.
And to say that celebs donning keffiyahs reminds Leora of what her friends and family have endured at the hands of people who proudly wear the thing is not prejudice, it’s a basic association between violent acts and how those committing the acts choose to portray themselves.
Panic, your assertion that Israel’s control of the West Bank constitutes the “longest occupation in human history” demonstrates a very shallow understanding of human history. The “occupation” if you count from 1967 has lasted forty years, that’s 92 years less than France’s 132 years of occupation in Algeria, 278 years less than Britain’s 318 years of occupation of Ireland, not to mention quite a bit less than the 2000 years of foreign occupation endured by Israel up until 1948.
As for the “few extremists” remark, I’m not sure how that jives with you implicit support for violence by Palestinian nationalists or your assertion that such violence is an unavoidable result of “occupation”. Millions of people have endured much harsher and more violent forms of repression that Palestinians living in the territories have ever experienced without resorting to suicide bombing and incessant rocket attacks against civilian targets. There is nothing historically predetermined about the Palestinian response to occupation, it’s a choice they have consciously made.
It’s fine if you want to reject the association of the keffiyah with terrorism, but don’t think for a second that wearing it demonstrates your commitment to world peace.

You people put too much damn thought into this…it’s a scarf and happens to be popular at the moment. She probably has no idea of it’s significance. I do agree with what ‘Panic’ said about bringing more hate into the world. Don’t make assumptions on the actions of celebrities or anyone else at that matter…who are you to judge in the first place??
The scarf is very popular here in Europe. I live in Spain, where it is worn by the majority of young people, whom are far from terrorists. They are causing no harm to anyone.
I’m sorry that when you see this it reminds you of terrorists, but that doesn’t mean that it reminds everyone else…
BTW..Mary-Kate Olsen has been seen wearing one in purple…I have yet to hear anything about her.

um, I like things that cover the face. I like balaclavas, ski masks, shemaghs, kefiyahs, scarves, those face masks you use when you’re handling insulation, hockey masks, paint ball masks, and a couple masks I made in art class that looked pretty cool.
am a white american man who works as a loader for a store that sells heavy things (hardware store), and I go to college part time (almost done). I play video games like Punisher, Ghost Recon 2, Hitman Blood Money, Postal 2, GTA San Andreas, GUN, Splinter Cell Double Agent, and Call of Duty 4. I collect airsoft guns that resemble military weapons, and I collect knives and some swords.
I am learning Korean, German, and I hope to learn russian and arabic. I don’t hang out with people too much, and sometimes I find high schoolers in my area to be brainless (when your teacher writes more referals than grades, you’ll understand)…
my point is…
does all that make me a potential terrorist? seriously! you have people who wear baggy pants, you associate them with rap and gang violence. you see a trench coat, and you pair it with columbine. you see a hockey mask, and put it with jason movies.
this needs to stop. I like trech coats, artificial guns, knives meant for combat, swords from varying cultures, languages spoken by people we once shot at in an official standing, and I’ve even met people of those races and nationalities. they’re pretty cool (except for North Koreans).
to be honest, I don’t like the act of turning a rifle against a human being and competing with him in hopes of killing him before he kills me. But seriously, all the coolest things in the world are gonna have a dark side to them.

Unfortunately, anyone condemming the Keffiyeh on the grounds of it being associated with ‘terrorist sympthaizers’ is just as ignorant as the people they condemn. The keffiyeh is a headress. The black-and-white patterend keffiyeh is SOMETIMES associated with Palestenian heritage & solidarity. The only other colour representative of a culture’s struggle is the red-and-black which is SOMETIMES associated with Jordan. The first best known westerner wearing the scarf was T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia, anyone?)
Please don’t listen to idiot remarks made by uneducated people and jump on the hate train. If you hear something, research it, don’t just immediately believe everything you hear. Crazy Americans.
To the writer of the blog… I definitely sympathize with your association for the loved ones you have lost, but blaming/associating their deaths with a symbol of strength/what has become a fashion statement (wartime ALWAYS shapes fashion, this is why YOU wear a t-shirt or why people wear khakis) is letting their deaths be in vain, and letting the people who hurt them win by disinformation and fear, which is what terrorism is all about.
