It’s Official: Jessica Simpson’s Come on Over is a Hit

Jessica Simpson’s new country single had many critics up in arms. They thought this was just another move by Jessica to reinvent herself rather than a genuine desire to be in country music for the long haul. And hey, why shouldn’t they feel that way? She’s wanted to be a gospel singer, then a pop diva, then a reality television show star, then a movie goddess…. and somehow none of those have really worked out for her. Add to that her high-profile romances and PR blunders such as forgetting the lyrics to “9 to 5″ (which happened to be right in front of her) and mistaking chicken for fish…. and well, you could just look at Jessica and laugh.
But the funny thing about this record is that despite them wanting to hate it, they don’t. They actually, when it’s all said and done, kind of like it. Enough that DJ’s are playing it voluntarily and people are downloading it. Enough that she’s getting interviews galore from country music these days. And now, Come On Over is a hit.
Kansas City.com says:
“Simpson’s debut single from her upcoming country album, is not only winning over those same skeptics, it’s gaining ground on country radio. A flirtatious, steel guitar-laced slice of pop country, the song has cracked the top 30 on Billboard’s country singles chart.”
Keep in mind it hasn’t even been released on an album yet. The story further says it’s “testing in the top five with online sampling” and phone surveys.
But what, exactly, does it mean? Are fans really embracing it?
Yes, by all accounts. The official word is that it “appeals to young, active listeners who are more likely to call radio stations.” And no doubt, buy records.
We could just be witnessing a career revival here, folks.
