Jessica Simpson vs. David Archuleta
Have you been watching American Idol? I’ve been impressed with some of the talent this year, and as we get down to the finals tonite, I thought I’d do a comparison test between one of the Idols and our own Jessica Simpson.
Earlier this year David Archuleta sang “Angels” on Idol. It was a great performance, perfect for his voice, and the judges loved it. Simon made an interesting comment that he wondered why no one else had ever made that a hit in the U.S.
Of course Jessica Simpson covered it about a year ago and brought it to like 47th or something. Not a big hit, but an attempt. (Apparently Simon didn’t know this!)
I’ve come across both versions, and thought I’d throw it out to all of you for your opinion.
Here’s David’s version:
and Jessica’s version:
Well?
I personally think the song fits David’s voice a little better. I’m not a fan of Jessica’s vocal theatrics in general and think it takes away from her otherwise beautiful voice. She’s a bit too over the top even for this video. I think David might even have a bigger hit than Jess if he were to release it.
What do you think?

Lauren,
I’m with you! David gave the song just the right amount of vocal theatrics, while Jess was a little over the top. Wonder if Archie will release it now that he’s sure to get a record deal? I bet he’d have a hit!

What about the _actual_ original performer of this song, Robbie Williams? (You do know that this is his song, right?)

(and “about a year ago”? Hello, it was on her 3rd album - well, the reissue of it - so that was more like FIVE years ago!)

Michelle: Yep, Robbie Williams was the one who originally recorded it in the UK. That’s why Simon couldn’t understand why a US artist hadn’t made it a hit. (Which he obviously wasn’t aware Jessica recorded it, but he was right in that it wasn’t a huge hit.)
