Ashlee Simpson’s new album, Bittersweet World, is in stores today and it’s received reviews that are as diverse as Ashlee’s hair styles!

The Baltimore Sun says the album is “stuck in a time warp” with the song “Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)” “channeling Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio’s quirkiness.”

I know Ashlee has leaned toward the 80’s type of music in the past, so this doesn’t sound like a bad thing. Besides that, if you watch the video, I think this is exactly the vibe she was going for. Check it out:

I mean, the Rubik’s cube says it all. Ash loves the 80s! So do I.

The Star-Telegram however, didn’t care for it, either, saying, “you can’t but feel a little sorry for Simpson. She’s the victim of an overbearing father and a public that cares more about who she’s dating than what she’s doing to earn a living.” The Province said, “I’d buy it for a friend’s kid if we were arguing.”

Ouch. Not everyone feels the same, however. The Houston Chronicle says, “the disc is an homage to the female-fronted, rebel yells of Missing Persons, Til Tuesday and Blondie, whose snarky personas have always seemed to snake their way through this Simpson’s music.” They go on to compliment the song “Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) by saying it “has the same synth claps and skulking groove of Madonna’s Burning Up and a booming, Devo-esque chorus.”

The Daily News says, “we get lots of electro-squeaky hooks and danceable synth gurgles, each referring back to the era of Missing Persons and Berlin. Yet Simpson betters Stefani’s take on the era, axing the annoying chirps in the vocals and, again, finding better melodies than her role model ever has.”

Of course, the only real opinion that counts is that of her fans. That’s you and me.
