Want to Smell Fancy Like Jessica Simpson?

I caught a sample of Jessica Simpson’s new fragrance Fancy the other day in a magazine pull out, and it made me curious to know what others think of it.

I’ll admit that my opinion is biased. I’ve used the same perfume for years and probably wouldn’t switch if you paid me. Still, I know Jess’ products sell very well and have made her a rich woman. Since Fancy is about a month old now, I thought I’d do a rundown of the some of the reviews it’s rec’d in case you’re looking for a new fragrance.

One of the reactions to Fancy has been the unusually edible ingredient list. Could this be a leftover from the body products Jess did a few years ago? Who knows. Still, The reviewer over at Bella Sugar first thought the same thing I did:

“When I first heard of the aromas featured in Jessica Simpson’s perfume, Fancy ($49-$59), I suddenly had the urge to make a sundae. Apricot, pear, toasted almonds, caramel? Yep, my teeth started aching just thinking about it.”

Call a dentist! I felt the same way. But it does win you over after a while. The reviewer goes on to say:

“The aroma isn’t as sticky-sweet as I envisioned — it’s more sophisticated than the overly literal smells of Jess’s earlier Dessert line. I loved Fancy’s lightness of apricot and pear notes; and the vanilla helped to add a subtle balance to the blend. It’s warm and inviting, and considering how men seem to go bananas for vanilla, it’s a good first-date fragrance.”

I didn’t know men go bananas for vanilla, but maybe Jessica did. Could this be the secret to why she has so many cute guys after her? (Naw… come to think of it, it’s probably her hot face and bod.) Bella Sugar gave Fancy 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

Over to Scent Addicts… they gave Fancy an overall B grade and said:

“I was expecting something, well… “fancy”. Where it is not ultra-young, it is definitely not something that I would consider classy, such as Flowerbomb. It isn’t bad, however - I would probably wear this perfume before I would wear any other sweet Floriental.”

The Scented Salamander says:

“Fancy smells so outside the canons of classical good taste that you have to give it to it that it sticks to its own idea of what a classy broad wears to smell good and sexy.”

Like her music, it seems fans are more willing to give her products a go than critics, however. On the Macy’s product review page, Fancy get 4.7 out of 5 stars, with fans saying they like the bottle and color as much as they do the overall scent.

As for me, I like a good marketing campaign as much as I do the product itself. To that end, here’s the “behind the scenes” shoot for the Fancy ad:

My biggest question goes out to all of you: Have you tried Fancy? What do you think?
